In 48 a.C, Julius Caesar (Sir Rex Harrison) chased Pompey from Farsalia to Egypt. Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII (Richard O’Sullivan), now supreme ruler after deposing his older sister, Cleopatra VII (Dame Elizabeth Taylor), attempts to win Caesar’s favor by introducing Pompey’s head to the conqueror, in charge of his governors, Potino (Grégoire Aslan) and Achillas (John Doucette). To win Caesar’s support from his brother, Cleopatra hides on a carpet, which Apollodorus (Cesare Danova), his servant, introduces to Caesar. The Roman gets infatuated immediately. Banishing Ptolemy, she declares Cleopatra as the only ruler of Egypt and takes her as her mistress. A son, Caesarion (Loris Loddi), is born from his union. Caesar, however, must return to Italy. Although briefly reunion with Cleopatra during a magnificent reception for the queen in Rome, Caesar is killed soon after and Cleopatra returns to Egypt.
